What Is a Compounding Pharmacy?

Most medicines are mass produced in fixed strengths and forms. A compounding pharmacy does the opposite. We make a medicine for one person, from individual ingredients, to a formula written by their prescriber.

That matters when the commercial product does not exist, has been discontinued, comes only in a strength that is wrong for the patient, or contains something the patient cannot tolerate. As a compounding chemist we can change the strength, the flavour, the base and the way the medicine is taken, while keeping the active ingredient exactly as prescribed.

Who We Compound For

Patients

Adults and children under the care of a GP, specialist or dentist who need a medicine made to a specific formula. Bring the prescription in, post it or upload it and we will take it from there.

Pets and Animals

Cats, dogs, birds, reptiles and horses, prepared to your vet’s prescription. Flavoured liquids, pastes and very small doses that are simply not made commercially for animals.

Prescribers

Doctors, dentists, vets and specialists across the Gold Coast send us formulas every week. Call or fax us to discuss a preparation before you write the script.

What We Can Compound

Every preparation below is made to a prescription from your doctor, specialist, dentist or vet. If what you need is not listed, call us on 07 5527 9428 and ask. The list of what a compounding chemist Gold Coast wide can prepare is far longer than any page will hold.

Young child happily taking a gummy style medicine at a table

Children are not small adults. A tablet made for a 70kg adult often cannot be split accurately for a toddler, and plenty of children will not swallow one at all. We prepare flavoured oral liquids, suspensions and smaller strengths so a child actually takes the dose their doctor intended.

Getting a tablet into a cat is a fair test of any relationship. Vets across the Gold Coast send prescriptions to us for flavoured liquids, pastes and transdermal preparations that animals will take without a fight, in doses that are far too small to be made commercially.

Skin preparations are one of the most common reasons a prescriber turns to compounding. The active may be right but the strength, the base or the preservative is not. We compound creams, gels, ointments and lotions to the formula on the script, in a base that suits the patient’s skin.

Where a prescriber has specified a strength or a delivery form that is not made commercially, we prepare it to that exact specification. Every hormone preparation we compound requires a current prescription, and we will contact your prescriber directly if any part of the formula needs clarifying.

We Also Compound

Hair and Scalp

Topical preparations compounded to prescription for patients being treated by a doctor for hair and scalp concerns.

Pain and Palliative Care

Topical and oral preparations made to a prescriber’s formula for patients who cannot use the commercial product.

Dental Preparations

Rinses, gels and pastes prepared to a dentist’s prescription for use before, during or after treatment.

Sleep Support Preparations

Prepared only on a current prescription, in the strength and dosage form your prescriber has specified.

Allergy Free Formulations

Preparations made without lactose, gluten, dyes, sugar or specific preservatives for patients who react to the commercial product.

Discontinued Medicines

If a product you rely on has been discontinued or is out of stock, ask your prescriber whether it can be compounded. Often it can.

Dosage Forms We Prepare

The form a medicine takes decides whether it gets taken at all. If swallowing a tablet is the problem, the answer is usually a different form rather than a different drug. Tell us what is not working and we will tell you what your prescriber could write instead.

How We Prepare Your Medicine

Compounding is a pharmacy discipline with its own equipment, ingredients and checks. Here is what happens once your prescription reaches us.

01

We read the formula

A pharmacist checks the strength, the base and the quantity against the prescription. If anything is unclear we call the prescriber before we start.

02

We source the ingredients

Ingredients come from established pharmaceutical suppliers, with documentation kept for every batch we use.

03

We compound on site

Your medicine is made in our own compounding room in Surfers Paradise. Nothing is sent to a third party.

04

We label and check

The finished preparation is checked by a registered pharmacist, labelled with directions, storage and an expiry, then ready for collection or courier.

Information for Prescribers

If you are a GP, specialist, dentist or vet on the Gold Coast and you are considering a compounded preparation, talk to us before you write it. We can tell you what is achievable, which base suits the active, what a realistic turnaround looks like and roughly what it will cost your patient.

We accept prescriptions in person, by post and by fax, and we are happy to discuss a formula over the phone.

Compounding Questions, Answered

It depends entirely on the formula. The active ingredients, the strength, the dosage form and the quantity all change the price, so there is no standard rate. Call us on 07 5527 9428 with the details of your prescription and we will quote you before we make anything.
Most compounded preparations are private prescriptions and are not PBS subsidised, because they are made for one patient rather than supplied as a registered product. We are a PBS approved pharmacy, so if you also have PBS prescriptions they can be filled here at the same time.
A normal prescription is dispensed from a manufactured product that already exists on the shelf. A compounded prescription is made from individual ingredients to a formula, for one patient. The active ingredient is the same one your prescriber chose, but the strength, base, flavour or dosage form is built around you.
Some preparations are ready the same day. Others take longer because ingredients need to be ordered in, or because the preparation itself takes time. Phone us with your prescription details and we will give you a realistic timeframe up front rather than after you have dropped it in.
Every preparation is compounded on site and checked by a registered pharmacist against the prescription before it leaves the pharmacy. We keep records of the ingredients used, and the label carries the directions, storage instructions and expiry.
Yes. Prescribers can post or fax a prescription to us, and we are happy to talk through a formula by phone before it is written. Our fax is 07 5604 1432.
Follow the storage instructions on the label, because compounded preparations vary. Some need refrigeration, some do not. Compounded medicines usually have a shorter expiry than a manufactured product, so check the date and ask us if you are unsure.
Yes. We dispatch Australia wide through our courier partner Aramex. Send us the prescription, we will confirm the details and price with you, and we will post the finished preparation to your address.
